Illinois law permits abortion at any point during pregnancy as long as the following conditions are met:
- A physician determines that the procedure is needed to protect the life or health of the woman. “Health” includes physical and emotional health. The doctor evaluates each situation individually.
- A second doctor is required to participate if the pregnancy is past viability.
- The physician also determines viability in each individual case.
Illinois outpatient abortion clinics choose to offer abortion up to 18 to 24 weeks, depending on the individual clinic. About 95% of abortion procedures in America take place at 15 weeks or earlier.
