Partner Changed His Mind: What Next?

Pregnancy can bring about a wave of different emotions. It can be especially difficult if you had one plan in mind at the beginning and suddenly, things changed. How do you take the next steps in your pregnancy decision when you are uncertain of your partner’s support? What happens when your partner wanted to continue the pregnancy, but now wants you to have an abortion?

Identifying Your Next Steps: Pregnancy Options

Women basically have 3 options to be considered for their pregnancy – 1) to carry and parent, 2) to carry and form an adoption plan or 3) to terminate, or have an abortion. Often, having the support of one’s partner has a huge impact on the decision a woman makes for her pregnancy. If partners don’t agree on a pregnancy option, then the decision made can often have a big impact on their relationship. Regardless of whether or not you have the support of your partner, we have found over the years that a woman will ultimately feel most at peace when she takes adequate time to evaluate all her options. This means understanding how the pregnancy is developing and assessing the impact of her decision: physically, emotionally, financially, in her relationship, and possibly her religion or faith.

Here are some areas of consideration when gathering information regarding your pregnancy options:

Physical Considerations

  • How far along am I in this pregnancy? What are my early pregnancy risks?
  • Are my options affected by how far along I am in this pregnancy?
  • How is my health and wellbeing?
  • Do I have physical conditions that need to be considered and/or monitored during pregnancy?
  • How would each of the options—parenting, adoption, and abortion—affect me physically?

Emotional Considerations

  • What are the emotional benefits and drawbacks to each of my options?
  • How would my decision affect me in the short term? How would my decision affect me longer term?
  • Will my decision have an impact on my relationships? With my boyfriend/spouse/partner? With my family? In what way?
  • Am I being pressured to make a particular decision? How will I feel about myself and the other person if I make a decision because of his or her pressure?
  • How do my faith or religious beliefs impact my decision?

Financial Considerations

  • What is the financial impact of each of my options?
  • What resources do I have available to me now?
  • Do I have friends or family who will support me in my decision?
  • Are there other community resources or agencies available to me that could help?
