Illinois Medicaid Cost of an Abortion

“There’s no way I could afford the price the abortion clinic just quoted to me.” This is a comment we hear when answering our telephone helpline. Frequently we receive questions about Medicaid and the cost of an abortion. What can you do when you’re faced with an unintended pregnancy and the cost of an abortion is a major concern for you?

The simplest answer is: We hope you will call us. We are here, in the suburbs of Chicago, because we care about the challenges you are facing. Please contact us today.

Whether or not Medicaid will cover the cost of an abortion depends on the laws in the state in which you live. In the case of private health insurance, it depends on the plan. Some may cover it, and some don’t. When it comes to this question about the cost of an abortion, unfortunately, there are no blanket answers. Each woman needs to personally reach out for answers to her unique situation.

We have found that there’s another important question that should not be skipped over when the cost of an abortion is a concern. This question can make a difference for the necessity of coming up with a way to pay for a termination procedure: “Might my body have a natural / spontaneous abortion (miscarriage)?”

Statistically, one out of every five or six pregnancies ends on its own as a result of spontaneous abortion, also known as miscarriage. An ultrasound conducted at six weeks or later can tell whether this is likely for a specific pregnancy. While you may be concerned about the cost of an abortion, it’s possible that your abortion may not be necessary at all.

Sometimes our callers have had an ultrasound elsewhere, but they were never told about their likelihood of miscarriage. Often, callers have not yet received any medical care for their pregnancies.
